In 1965, construction of the parking garage on Schmiedestraße was completed. The artist Hans Uhlmann (b. 1900 in Berlin – d. 1975) was brought in as a consultant and created a sculpture that corresponds with the building’s façade. This is a successful example of the trend in the 1960s toward art in architecture gradually becoming detached from the buildings themselves. The consistent integration of architecture and sculpture extends the façade’s structure into the urban space, thereby allowing visual connections beyond the building. This “externalization” creates a sense of density. The work is by no means a commentary or ornament, but rather an independent, equal element. » Location: Schmiedestraße (in front of the parking garage)
